Preventive
Maintenance Care
Preventive Maintenance Therapy (PMT) appointment involves
more than most people realize. Many people look upon this visit as the practice
of having their teeth just cleaned, a simple, routine procedure.
The PMT appointment does remove hardened bacterial masses
from the tooth. However, in a prevention-oriented periodontal practice, this
visit is actually a gentle but also an intricate procedure. It helps prevent
disease and allows us to concentrate on health care rather than sick care.
While we are cleaning the teeth we are also looking for
decay and scrutinizing the health of your gum tissue. For it is the gum tissue
which exhibits the tell-tale signs that bacterial colonies may be increasing in
number and activity or that gum disease may be active. When this insidious,
asymptomatic disease process can be identified early, it will be much easier to
treat.
In most cases, your periodontal maintenance can be
alternated between our office and your dentists office, allowing for continual
care with your dentist and better communication.
